The 30 Best No-GMAT Online MBA Degree Programs

At one point, the GMAT was a requirement for applying to a prestigious graduate business school. In recent years, many business schools are placing less emphasis on just a set of test scores accumulated in a few hours, and looking at what potential students have to offer holistically. Online MBA admissions councils are evaluating the students’ undergraduate GPA, professional work experience, and school and community organization involvement. All of the online MBA programs on this month’s ranking allow GMAT waivers based on specific criteria or don’t require applicants to take the GMAT at all. These programs still offer the same rigorous curriculum and can help you earn a promotion or pay raise upon completion.

A GMAT exemption offers many benefits to applicants. Who wants to spend months studying, when they have already spent years in the real-world working in a professional business setting or pay $250 to take a test? By applying to one of these prestigious business programs, most students will be able to forgo the stress associated with the grueling GMAT. Professionals are busy adults with many responsibilities, and these online MBA programs realize and respect that, and offer more practical alternatives. Many of these programs offer rolling admissions and have multiple start dates throughout the year. With mini accelerated semesters, you could potentially begin your degree within a matter of weeks, and be earning credits towards your MBA, instead of just taking practice GMAT tests and prep courses. If you are preparing to apply to an online MBA program, you can begin working on writing strong essays, talking to current and former employers about being a reference or writing a letter of recommendation, and polishing your resume; all components that could simultaneously be used to land your next dream job as well. Admissions committees are not lowering their standards; just thinking about applicants in a whole new way.

What is the GMAT?

Many students spend weeks or even months pouring over study guides or taking prep courses to prepare for the GMAT, or Graduate Management Admissions Test, in hopes of getting into the most competitive business schools. The GMAT is a computer-based assessment conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council composed of four sections; Analytic Writing, Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Integrated Reasoning. The quantitative reasoning section consists of 31 math questions covering basic algebra and geometry. Verbal reasoning is made up of 36 questions, including grammar, logical skills, and reading comprehension. The integrated reasoning part requires students to draw inferences based on charts, graphs, and tables and is comprised of 12 questions. Students are allotted 30 minutes to complete the analytic writing section and scored on a scale of zero to six based on their ability to analyze an argument on a business or general interest topic. All four sections must be completed within 3.5 hours. Composite scores range from 200-800, with 556 as the average overall score. Students who wish to retake the GMAT must wait a minimum of 31 days, and colleges will have access to scores from each previously reported attempt. The GMAT will set you back $250, so it’s important to dedicate time to make sure you are well-prepared before sitting for an exam. GMAT scores remain valid for five years.

If I don’t take the GMAT, what will schools consider?

While the GMAT is a requirement for many MBA programs, schools frequently will offer waivers based on certain criteria. Business schools consider many factors when determining whether they believe a student is a qualified applicant and capable of performing well in graduate-level business courses. GMAT waivers for business schools vary widely, depending on the other admissions requirements, as well as the competitiveness of the school. Some factors that may allow you to forgo the GMAT include professional work experience, graduation from an AACSB undergraduate business program, completion of another master’s degree, and undergraduate accomplishments. Typically, business schools will require a minimum of five years of managerial business experience prior to waiving the GMAT requirement. It is essential for previous work history to be clearly outlined in your resume, including any supervisory responsibilities and the number of employees managed. Students with a business undergraduate degree who can demonstrate strengths in core business competencies through their transcript, who graduated from an accredited business school, or were members of business honor societies are often exempt from taking the GMAT. If you hold a non-business major, you may still qualify for an exemption depending on your GPA. The standard GPA requirement is generally between 3.0 and 3.5. Applicants with a master’s degree or professional degree have proven they are capable of succeeding in graduate school and beyond, and therefore generally will be considered for GMAT waivers as well.

What are other important factors in my application?

Business schools look at what each candidate has to offer holistically, not just a set of standardized test scores. Students are able to enhance their application with strong recommendation letters from supervisors or professors, well-written essays, submitting a resume that provides an overview of their career accomplishments, and high undergraduate GPAs. Applicants with minimal work experience can highlight leadership experience within their community, undergraduate student organizations, and internship, and study abroad participation. Some business programs also allow students to complete an optional video or in-person interview. This can be an excellent opportunity to make a lasting impression with the admissions committee. Students who have a lower undergraduate GPA may be able to write a supplemental essay explaining any hardships they endured, and why they feel they will do better in graduate school. Graduate schools also understand that the student you were in your early 20s, may not reflect the professional you have become today.

Can I start my online MBA faster without the GMAT?

Studying for the GMAT, sitting for the exam, awaiting test scores, and possibly retaking the GMAT can take up a substantial amount of time, as well as money. Therefore, students who apply to programs without a GMAT requirement or one that allows a waiver may be able to start working on their MBA much quicker. Some graduate programs offer an accelerated class format, with courses beginning as frequent as every month. Being exempt from the GMAT means you could potentially fill out your online application tonight, submit your college transcripts, and be on your way to starting your online MBA degree within weeks.
